Homeroom Poetry is an arts education program that utilizes poetry and other creative writing prompts as a teaching tool to improve reading comprehension, writing and communication skills, confidence, and self-expression.
Poetry can give students a healthy outlet for surging emotions. Reading original poetry aloud in class can foster trust and empathy in the classroom community, while also emphasizing speaking and listening skills that are often neglected in high school literature classes. Students who struggle with writing essays tend to like poetry, because of its variety of fixed rules depending on style and kinship with rap.
Homeroom Poetry’s pedagogy consist of combining poetry and music, which helps students stay engage and foster new opportunities for students to identify and display skills and talents. Poetry can become a gateway to other forms of writing and help teach skills that are helpful in other subjects or careers that utilize writing. Homeroom Poetry provides the opportunity to explore writing careers and opens students to new possibilities.
